 For three hundred years there has been balance, a very fragile balance, but there was equilibrium none the less. The seals holding up the boundary between the world of the dead and the world of the living remained firmly in place, no one dared meddle with them. Therefore the shinigami did not find it necessary to guard the boundary anymore. This was the largest mistake they could have made, for in the year 2015 one of the seals would be broken and bring chaos onto the earth.

The Five Celestial Families have existed for centuries. It is believed that they had their origins in the Feudal Era, though there is no record of this, nor is there any proof that his is where they came to be. There is no known purpose for the five families, however, each of the five seals on the boundary between worlds are imprinted the two characters for each family name. There is one seal for each family, Nakamura 中村 , Yamamoto 山本, Kobayashi 小林 , Satou 佐藤 , Tanaka 田中. Each seal may only be weakened or broken by one who has that particular family's blood running through their veins. The thicker the blood, the easier to manipulate the locks it would be.
Little did anyone suspect that one of the families would even consider weakening or breaking a seal. The world's balance shifted on January 1st of 2015, when the head of the Tanaka family broke their family seal.

The boundary began it's slow disintegration, a small crack releasing a number of things into the world of the living that should not be there. Spirits burst through, demons slyly slipped through the cracks. The breaking of the Tanaka seal also triggered the awakening of the vampires. Three hundred years ago, the vampires were forced into a deep, comatose sleep by the head of the Tanaka family. He used the power of the seal, in combination with his necromancy to make them prisoners in their own bodies, to keep humanity safe. When the Tanaka seal was broken, the hold on the vampires broke as well, and they woke from their three-hundred-year sleep.

The shinigami are responsible for restoring the order. They have to stop the Tanaka's before they find a way to break the other seals and destroy the boundary altogether. Therefore the shinigami approached the other four Celestial Families and demanded that they work together to stop the Tanaka and the impending chaos they have put into motion.
